The Gatherer…

I am a gatherer of stories…

I gather them like I gather plants… bits and pieces from my favorite places, tucked into pockets, shirts and packs.

Collecting on my bedside table, waiting for their second life.

~

I’ve been gathering stories about hoedowns, and heavy winds.

A dozen rattle snakes every summer, and a mom who carried a baby and a shotgun.

A story about a baby who’s love for the natural world began in the salty womb.

Stories of showers at the beach everyday for a year yet feeling as if you’re the richest person on earth.

Stories of week long boat trips to a secluded island with no one around but you and the teaming sea.

Stories of being under the cold surf for 8 hrs a day and facing down great white sharks. Then crossing the channel and meeting your family at the harbor at the perfect time despite having no phone.

Stories of climbing cliffs in the cold, sleeting rain while carrying warm laundry for your loved ones.

Stories of infancy and cakes, coyotes and eucalyptus.

~

One day I will tell these stories in their completeness. Weave the words together to bring them back to life. But for now I’m content to gather them, let them circle around me and fill me up.
